Upper Mustang is located is an ancient Himalayan Kingdom which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of the Kaligandaki River. During the Upper Mustang Trek, you enter the restricted area of an ancient land with its own distinct history and tradition.

The Upper Mustang trek begins from Jomsom where is an airstrip. It is 150 km to reach Mustang. The glittering snow peaks such as Nilgiri, Muktinath and Tukche is covering the Mustang land. Nilgiri, Muktinath and Tukche are the famous shrine of Hindus.

The landscape of Mustang is unmatched pristine scenery, stupendous wildness, spectacular 16th century monasteries, snow capped peaks and many other unique attractions. The trekking in straggle high mountains offers a unique experience.

Upper Mustang remains one of the few areas in Tibet’s original sphere of influence where Tibetan culture continues to survive. The challenge we face today is to improve our living conditions, and at the same time to strengthen and keep alive our unique culture. The Mustang region is dry, desolate and windy, and is a paradise like no other on earth. Strong winds blowing up between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains have created a dry desert landscape- dusty and bare in all its beauty. Because of dry climate found over here agriculture is impossible without irrigation and agro-productive land is also very nominal. Polyandry, marriage of one woman with two or more brothers, is still in practice to avoid the splitting of the family’s farmland. But like all traditional ways, these are changing too. Mustang was a forbidden land for centuries and little was known of this Trans Himalayan valley which has wonderful variety of its heritage, lively Tibetan culture and fascinating landscape. Early visitors explored the silent features of this unique hidden land, its great castle, ancient monasteries, lonely hermitage and remote villages.

Upper Mustang consists of two destine regions: the south region with five villages inhabited by people related to the Managis; and the northern region (the ancient kingdom of Lo), where the language, culture and traditions are almost purely Tibetan, the capital of Lo is named manthang, which translates from the Tibetan as ‘plain of aspiration’ many texts refer to the capital as Lo Manthang, but this is not strictly correct, Other texts spell the name of the kingdom as Lho, but this is a transliteration of the Tibetan word for ‘south’ and is also incorrect. Thus the portion of the upper Mustang district north of Samar is Lo and its capital is Mustang the king of Lo is the Lo Gyelbu, though I use the Nepali term raja here. To avoid total confusion with existing Maps and texts, there are many complex issues relating to the development of upper Mustang and the procedures under which trekkers are allowed to visit the area.

Tsum comes from the Tibetan word ‘Tsombo’, which means vivid. Against the majestic backdrop of the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal and Baudha Himal ranges, this serene Himalayan valley is rich in ancient art, culture, and religion. The Tsum Valley’s acquaintance with Tibet, natural beauty and its pristine culture make this trekking unique. Trails are strewn with artistic chortens and lined with mani walls made of thousands of stone slabs carved with deities and prayers. The Tsum valley has a long history of Buddhism.

The Buddhist saint Milarepa is believed to have meditated in the caves of there mountains. Traditionally Tsum valley was a culturally distinct geographical area called ‘Tsum Tso Chuksum’, which means thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory. The ancient remains of the Tsum Kingdom are still visibletoday. Due to its remoteness and inaccessibility, this sacred valley and its people have been bypassed by mainstream development for centuries. As a result, the unique culture of this valley has remained intact.

The trek from Jiri to Everest Base Camp is a classical trek. The trekking route was follows by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa , the steps of first mountaineers on their successful Everest Expedition in 1953. The route was very famous until the flights to Lukla not operated. Although, the trekkers start the trek to Everest Base Camp from Lukla after taking a flight to Lukla due to time limitation but the Everest base camp trek starting from Jiri is equally accepted and regularly used by trekkers.

The trekking trail from Jiri to Everest Base camp offers to catch the great mountain country, rivers and streams, beautiful culturally rich villages, less crowded trail and most importantly the opportunity of more gradual acclimatization. You will get a chance to visit more Buddhist monasteries, more of the culturally rich Sherpa and other ethnic villages representing simple yet affluent mountain lifestyles and walking on this track proves to be quite a significant experience.

The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek starts -your journey to Jiri. The 8-9 hours bus drive along the Arniko Highway is made pleasant by the great views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal peaks on the north. In the early days of the trek, Himalayan views will not feature very much, but shortly after leaving Junbesi the trail rounds a spur and a sudden panorama of big mountains opens up ahead; you catch a first, though only brief sighting of Everest, Lhotse, Kusum Kangguru, Thamserku, Kangtega and Makalu. There’s promise in that teasing view, but its not until you reach Namche that the promise will be fulfilled.

At Namche Bazaar, we enjoy the Sherpa village, its culture and monasteries, the mountaineers and wild life museums on the acclimatization day. Ahead we follow the classical route to reach up the base camp of the world’s highest peak and also to the famous vantage point, Kala Patthar, where a marvelous 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas awaits us. After achieving our target of Everest Base Camp, we walk back down to Lukla for a return flight to Kathmandu.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most celebrated and thrilling trekking routes in the world. Nestled in the heart of Nepal, this trek offers a mesmerizing blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and physical challenge. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Mardi Himal Trek, and Poon Hill Trek are some of the amazing high-altitude trails that take you through the beautiful mountains and valleys of the Annapurna region.

However, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is considered the best of them all. From the Annapurna Circuit to Annapurna Base Camp, the Annapurna region is a true trekking paradise. Those willing to disconnect from the world of Wi-Fi for a long-distance trek are rewarded with amazing routes filled with teahouses, Tibetan temples, subtropical lowlands, and towering mountain peaks.

For those seeking an unforgettable adventure, Smile Adventure is your perfect companion to guide you through this incredible journey.

Highlights of the Annapurna Trek

Thorong La Pass (5416 m)

The holy Muktinath Temple

Manang, the stunning Himalayan Village

Annapurna range and the neighbouring mountains

Culturally rich villages

IS THE ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT YOUR IDEAL TREK?

Trekking in the Annapurna region requires the right attitude. Adventure travel means being ready for the unexpected. In remote and developing areas, you won’t find the same standards as at home. Plans might change due to unpredictable conditions. To fully enjoy your trip, you need to be flexible, positive, and ready for any challenges on your Annapurna Circuit journey. If you’re new to wilderness trekking, this trek is perfect for you.

Key Points About the Annapurna Circuit Trek:

Less Crowded than Everest Base Camp Trek: While still busy, the Annapurna Circuit sees fewer crowds compared to the Everest Base Camp Trek. However, areas around Tilicho Base Camp can get particularly busy with locals trekking to the lake without completing the full circuit.

Teahouses Along the Way: Every village along the route has teahouses, providing trekkers with comfortable accommodation, warm beds with blankets, access to showers, delicious meals in restaurants, and the ability to charge electronics and cameras each night.

Accessible Trailhead: Unlike some treks, the trailhead of the Annapurna Circuit can be reached by car, eliminating the need for expensive domestic flights to remote airstrips.

Road Access to Khangsar: The road extends to Khangsar, reducing the sense of remoteness and tranquility until the later stages of the hike. While side trails are available for better views and to avoid cars, seeing tourists in vehicles pass by can be disheartening for some trekkers.

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT TREK PERMIT

Required Permits

To trek the Annapurna Circuit, you will need two permits:

– Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS)

– Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP)

TREK DIFFICULTY

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most beautiful trekking trails in the Annapurna region. It is considered moderate, with well-paved paths in densely populated areas. However, modern facilities are scarce, and the road can be rugged. One of the major challenges is the Thorong La Pass, which is one of the highest passes in the world, standing at an elevation of 5,416 meters above sea level. While crossing Thorong La can be tough, the overall trek is moderate if you have experience trekking at high altitudes.

THE TREKKING EXPERIENCE

Preparation and Gear

Before setting off on the Annapurna Circuit Trek, it’s essential to be well-prepared. Proper gear and equipment are crucial for a successful trek. Smile Adventure provides a comprehensive packing list, ensuring you have everything you need, from sturdy hiking boots to warm clothing. Our team also offers pre-trek briefings, covering essential topics such as altitude sickness, safety measures, and acclimatization.

The Route

The Annapurna Circuit Trek typically starts from Besisahar and ends in Pokhara, taking you through a variety of terrains and altitudes. The journey begins in lush subtropical forests, gradually ascending to the alpine meadows and arid landscapes of the Manang Valley. The highest point of the trek is the Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. From there, the descent takes you through the holy town of Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world.

This route offers a mix of cultural experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and challenging yet rewarding trekking paths.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS

Throughout the trek, Smile Adventure ensures comfortable accommodations in teahouses and lodges along the route. These provide basic yet cozy amenities, allowing you to rest and rejuvenate after a day of trekking. You’ll enjoy hearty meals featuring local and international cuisine, with plenty of options to suit various dietary preferences. Our team ensures that you are well-nourished and hydrated, essential for tackling the challenges of the trek.

WHEN TO WALK THE ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT?

Choosing the right time of year to trek in Annapurna or hike the Annapurna Circuit is essential. The best times to hike the Annapurna Circuit are October-November or April-May. During these months, the weather is typically dry, the skies are clear, and it won’t be extremely cold at higher altitudes.

In the winter months, the weather is often clear and the scenery stunning, but heavy snowfall can cause the Thorong La Pass to close for several days.

HOW COLD DOES IT GET ON THE ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT?

On the Annapurna Circuit, temperatures can vary depending on the season and altitude.

Winter Months:

Daytime: The average daytime temperature ranges from 5 to 10°C.

Higher Altitudes: Temperatures can drop as low as -20°C, especially at higher altitudes, and even lower at night.

Warmer Months:

Lower Altitudes (below 2,500m): Expect temperatures between 15 to 23°C.

Higher Altitudes (above 4,000m): Temperatures will drop below 10°C.

Thorung La Pass: At the highest point of the trek, Thorung La, temperatures may be below freezing.

So, even during the summer months, it’s important to pack warm clothes due to the significant temperature drops as you ascend in altitude.
